We will be continuing our successful Haydn cycle with this psychological chamber play. “L’ isola disabitata” is said to have been the composer’s favorite opera. Indeed this “azione teatrale” is a one-of-a-kind musical gem, which is able to dispense with the secco-recitatives that were common at the time. This is something unique in all of Haydn’s operas.
The idea of being stranded on a deserted island, far away from any civilization, continues to fascinate people to this day. This material that recalled Robinson Crusoe inspired Joseph Haydn to write one of his most beautiful scores. He knew how to derive new, unsuspected sparks from Pietro Metastasio’s libretto which has been set to music several times.
